Nate
I couldnât quit staring at that stupid sock. I hadnât realized that Iâd accidentally stolen the snitch sock Iâd used to blindfold her until Iâd already gotten home and headed for the shower. When Iâd taken off my pants, Iâd seen there was something in the pocket. That something happened to be one knee-high dark green sock with a ball from a fictional game on it.
I picked it up as I moved to my library. The room wasnât massive, but Iâd filled it, floor to ceiling, with bookcases. I had some leather-bound classics and first editions that I didnât read, but most of the books here were ones I loved. I knew I didnât come across as a reader, and I did little to dispel that notion. I had a reputation that allowed me to get done the things I needed to get done. The fact that my reader copies of a certain British series about a wizard were dog-eared and worn would do more harm to my reputation than good.
The only two chairs in the room were plush and comfortable, bought specifically for this room, for me to sit in when I wanted to read. Iâd never liked reading in bed. While my bedroom was personal space, this place was my sanctuary.
I selected another one of my favorites and took a seat. T.S. Eliotâs The Wasteland. Iâd had to read it in college, and Iâd been surprised at how much Iâd liked the poetry. Iâd gotten into the habit of reading it every year, even though I had most of it memorized.
Except I couldnât lose myself in it as I had so many times before.
It was that damn sock. I told myself not to carry it around like some kid with a stuffed animal, but every time I put it down, I found myself picking it back up, remembering what Iâd used its twin for last night.
What had I been thinking? Going to Ashleeâs place and having sex with her hadnât been part of my plan for yesterday. Tying her up with those ridiculous socks of hers. Taking her so hard that my own muscles were feeling it today.
When Iâd left her yesterday, Iâd tried telling myself that the oval bruises on her hips couldnât be from the first time weâd been together, but Iâd known them for what they were. Iâd held her too tight, too close. And then Iâd done it again. Been too rough and taken things too far.
Exceptâ¦she hadnât asked me to stop, either specifically or with her safe word. Iâd been with plenty of women over the years, and I liked to think that I knew when they enjoyed themselves. Unless I was losing my touch, Ashlee had liked what weâd done, rough as it was.
And I couldnât quit wishing for more.
Iâd read the same page three times before I set the book aside. It was a little after noon right now, which meant it was far too early for me to go back to Ashleeâs or to ask her to come to me.
